The new racing car with which the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team is to start the 2015 season is a sophisticated further development of the successful previous year model. The F1 W06 Hybrid is exactly five metres long, 1.80 metres wide and 95 centimetres "low". Thanks to the lightweight, robust carbon-fibre of which most bodyshell and chassis components are made, it weighs in at a mere 702 kilos. The Mercedes-Benz PU106B Hybrid power unit comprises, this season again, a six-cylinder turbocharged internal-combustion engine with a displacement of 1.6 litres. This is complemented by the most important integrated hybrid energy recovery components: an electric motor-generator unit and a lithium-ion battery solution acting as an energy storage unit. A sequential semi-automatic transmission featuring eight forward and one reverse gear, a clutch with carbon-fibre discs and a carbon-fibre transmission housing.
