In case the starter would be blocked due to a previously occurred damage (e.g. hydrolocked engine), a very high electric current would flow through the starting current limiter during the following start attempt. Should the driver attempt to start the engine repeatedly despite the engine not cranking, the very high electric current might lead to overheating of the starting current limiter.
As a precautionary measure Daimler AG, via its Mercedes-Benz service partners, will install an additional fuse in the electrical line to the starter.
We hereby would like to inform you the following steps to ensure the vehicle operation safety in the meantime of waiting for the official information about the recall campaign.
1. Daimler AG is aware it via its product monitoring, thermal overload cases are connected only to events when engine is damaged and not cranking anymore and the driver attempts to start the engine repeatedly despite the engine not cranking. With reference to MB Service Booklet (Page 14), instructions are given to customer that If your engine stops operating or not operating properly, please get help to move your car out of the flooded area and contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz service center immediately for assistance. Absolutely, do not restart the engine.
