PRO-SAFE™, the integral Mercedes-Benz safety philosophy, comes one step closer to the vision of accident-free driving. It divides automotive safety into four phases:

In the first phase, functions such as ESP® provide for comfortable and above all safe driving in the GL-Class. ESP® can help you handle critical situations by applying the brakes at individual wheels as required and adjusting the engine torque.

The optional COMAND APS control and display system makes the driver's job easier by minimising the distractions from traffic as much as possible.

In the second phase, which is in the event of danger, the optional PRE-SAFE® functions take effect. Depending on the situation and vehicle equipment, the sliding sunroof and the side windows close automatically and the front seat belts are pulled taut. In the third phase, which occurs during an accident, comprehensive passive safety systems come into play. In the interior of the GL, driver and front passenger airbags help prevent injury. Sidebags and windowbags round out this protection. Automatic child seat recognition is available in the front passenger seat as an optional extra. In the fourth phase, after an accident, further measures help to make rescuing occupants easier.
