Comes as standard in the C200 and C250, Mercedes-Benz Charged Gasoline Injection (CGI) engines offer significant improvements in fuel economy and performance.
They are the world’s first petrol engines to harness the incredible precision of Piezo direct injection and spray-guided combustion – and the results speak for themselves. CGI engines consume 10% less fuel than conventionally injected units while delivering 4% more torque and an additional 20hp. The C200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY generates 184 hp at 5250 rpm, rated torque of 270 Nm at 1800 - 4600 rpm, it takes 8.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill. In the mean while, the respective data for C250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY are 204 hp at 5500 rpm, 310 Nm at 2000 – 4300 rpm, and 7.4 seconds. Both of them meet the EU5 emission standard.
The main advantage of the CGI engine is in the stratified operating mode from which it takes its name. During this mode the engine is run with high excess air and thus excellent fuel efficiency. Multiple injection extends this lean-burn operating mode to higher rpm and load ranges too. During each compression stroke, a series of injections takes place, spaced just fractions of a second apart. This improves mixture formation, combustion and fuel consumption.
A special feature distinguishes the third 4-cylinder petrol engine of the C-Class Saloon: thanks to less displacement in the engine, lower weight and improved aerodynamics, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the car were significantly reduced. This is also due in part to tyres with lower rolling resistance.

Refined power – in the shape of three 6-cylinder powerplants in the C 300. They embody the perfect symbiosis of refinement and fast acceleration. The maximum torque of 300 Nm is available across a particularly wide engine speed range, ensuring impressive power reserves are on tap in any driving situation.
A further feature of the V6 engines is the exemplary fuel consumption. All thanks to the four variable camshafts with infinitely adjustable control as circumstances necessitate. Consequently, just the right amount of fuel is added as the particular driving situation demands. The C 300 delivers 170 kW (231 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Its acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h of just 7.2 seconds is on a par with a sports car – when it comes to comfort though, it’s in a different league.
The 6-cylinder version is not particularly economical in terms of fuel consumption – they can incidentally be identified by their sporty twin-pipe exhaust system.
